After a very hectic day, you come home and sleep. While you are sleeping, from nowhere you get a feeling that you are falling down into the void! Most of you people must have experienced it. This feeling of falling is called as Hypnic Jerk.
The Hypnic Jerk or Myoclonic Jerk is an involuntary twitch which occurs when a person is beginning to fall asleep, often causing them to jump and awaken suddenly for a moment. Hypnic jerks are one form of involuntary muscle twitches called myoclonus. Most of the time the jerks are also associated with an increase in heartbeat and excessive sweating.
Causes Of Hypnic Jerks :
When it comes to the actual causes, it is quite important to note that there are a lot of theories behind them. Unfortunately, no one has currently been able to identify the most definitive answer to this problem which seems to be as old as time. This may happen due to an irregular sleep schedule. The other reasons to it include anxiety, stress, consumption of caffeine and alcohol as well as exercising late at night. Though hypnic jerks are pretty normal there is nothing to worry about.
Tips To Cure Hypnic Jerks :
- Reduce Caffeine :- The first and foremost thing you can easily do is reduce the consumption of coffee. If you cannot do that then at least don’t have coffee after evening. This will eventually reduce the jerks and will help you have a better sleep.
- Reduce Alcohol intake :- Consumption of alcohol has many more side effects other than causing these jerks such as liver damage etc. Sure, we get that it’s quite tempting to knock back a glass of wine, it’s also important to note that this would compromise the quality of your sleep and you may find yourself twitching through the night.
- Avoid Doing Heavy Exercises At Night :- Well exercising is pretty good for our health but exercising too has a proper time. Morning hours are the best for it as we feel fresh at morning we have a greater stamina. If you don’t have time in morning then you can do mild exercising in evening.
Hypnic jerks occur more in children under the age of 12. Especially in infants that is one of the reason that they wake up with a jerk and sleep again the next instant. It reduces as one grows up.
